Summary The article is entitled “Generation Robot : How toys are preparing kids for a future with robotic companion”. Corrine Iozzio suggests that kids are being given technologically advanced electronic toys that cause them to be socially dependent on them and nonfunctioning social situations with other people. The article calls this group of children ‘generation z’. The articles mentions that the Japanese company Hasbro has puts out the “Furby”, which is a robotic plus that gathers information and can respond appropriately. The article suggests that America has to change the ways of its education to meet the needs of a child who plays with toys that have artificial intelligence. We have to use the means that reaches these prototype kids. The school that doesn’t provide up-to-date technology access is wasting time. Education must be realistic and support a future in which technology is king. The author tells us that these children will be the leaders of the next technological innovations and that education should be charged with the task of preparing them for the future. Reflection I really appreciated this article. It is a prediction of a future that will have children having individual companions in school. Students will be able to have a robotic companion guiding them through school. I think this is very possible and would be very beneficial for the modern student. There is a lot of technology available to us and we should embrace it as teachers. Twitter and Facebook are too satisfying and too quick for us to compete with so it is just best to use technology as a tool. I know that student engagement is the key to reaching education objectives and I would embrace this idea put into practice in my school. I do not think it is farfetched to say that children are becoming less communicative and more dependent on devices.
Holly Crosby Reflection on Standard 1 - ISTE-NETS for Teachers
First and foremost, Standard 1 of the ISTE-NETS for teachers addresses that teachers need to inspire students to learn and express themselves creatively. Through the use of technology, students should be encouraged to collaborate with their peers and teachers face-to-face and virtually. In other words, students need to have skills to get their points across to others through personal and virtual encounters. Also, this standard states that teachers need to advance student learning. Educators need to encourage students to take risks and show their creativity. Some students may be a bit shy; however, through the use of technology their talents would be able to surface. The Internet is a great tool to allow students to research various real world issues. In doing this, students would then be able to get into groups and make an awareness presentation of a particular issue to share with the class. This is a great way to show that students can indeed have a voice in these issues. This standard also mentions how it is important for the student to reflect and evaluate the collaborative efforts during class. This could possibly be done on a survey. As one now, I feel excited about incorporating technology into my classroom. I believe that through the incorporation of technology in the classroom my students will be more motivated to learn and engaged. I also believe that my increasing the use of technology throughout the day, students’ reading skills will sky rocket. One of my concerns in this debate about technology being incorporated into the classroom is that there are not enough computers in my classroom. It is a very daunting task to try and get my students to rotate the computer usage. I do feel strong in my efforts to create technology pieces that could be used in the classroom. Back in January, I took a course on incorporating technology in the classroom. I found it very fun and it made me want to revamp all of my lessons over this summer. We made virtual field trips, a webquest, a web 2.0 project, etc. As I mentioned before, my biggest task is getting my students to actively use the computers in my room for an appropriate amount of time. I think maybe I could have a log set up to allow my student one day on the computer for 20-30 minutes since I have a rather large class with only four computers.
The main requirements of standard 1 begin with guiding and inspiring students to expand their learning and creativity. This standard wants us to use prior and new knowledge to make meaningful experiences for each student that will support advancement. We want students to be competent learners who are able to be creative and use their innovative thoughts in various environments. Students have to be motivated to want to discover the wide variety of resources out and available for them to use to problem solve and explore real world issues.
I feel that as I become more confident in my technology skills I am able to inspire my students to be more creative. I want my students to have a conceptual understanding of how to use their creative skills in and out of the classroom. I allow my students to explore and experiment with the smart board in our classroom. It is my goal for them to be competent and not hesitant when faced with new technology tools. My students are always allowed center time to explore the computers and use their technology skills to expand their knowledge. I know that the world is rapidly changing and technology is here and not going away. Business owners are wanting graduates who are able to display their technology skills right out of high school. With the changes in our school standards, we are beginning to merge technology skills into our standards so that students are capable and able to perform at a higher level
Teachers use their knowledge of subject matter, teaching, learning, and technology to facilitate experiences that advance student learning, creativity, and innovation in both face-to-face and virtual environments. We, as teachers, are to guide students to learn, and our delivery is very important. How we facilitate, what methods we use, and technologies we use are vital be they visuals, audios, books, journals, and online sources, as long as they are relevant and is a value-add to students’ learning. In order to communicate in the world, a person needs to know how to utilize different modes such as phones, email, texting, twitter, bogs, and face-to-face communications such as Skype and Google chat. In today’s school environment teachers are modeling and encouraging creative thinking and problem solving. In order to succeed in the world, students need to practice collaborating. While instructing and assigning lessons, teachers should explain and model how to think using techniques such as think talk, or model how to plan using methods such as mind maps. I feel confident about many of the performance indicators for this standard. For example, when I was in the classroom I would regularly model how to organize and question sources like the secondary sources including texts, newspapers, and websites. I had students regularly research websites for projects and papers. Collaboration would begin on the first day of school when I would introduce the dynamics of functional teamwork. Group learning was used a lot where students knew the specific goals and rules, which made for positive learning experiences. At this point, my mental readiness is sufficient in that I am willing to implement more advanced technology. In my opinion, my weakness with regard to the requirements is my sheer lack of knowledge about the ever-changing technology. Also, I may feel incompetent approaching colleagues who may know more about the content that I do. My strength I have with regard to the requirements is that there is a lot of room to prompt discussion within a school. Now I just need to muster the courage to approach colleagues who have a better grasp of technology and not feel intimidated. I would be enthusiastic to utilize technology and could see it paving the way for building relationships with colleagues like librarians and IT staff, as well as administrators. I imagine a hindrance of complying with these standards might be cost. If the students were unable to tap into advanced modes of communication due to economic hardship, I think it would be difficult to utilize different technologies. If schools are economically at risk there may not be a lot of modern computers, software licenses or IT support. Also, if the teacher does not keep abreast of current technology, it could be a time sapper for the instructor and a frustration for the students. I could overcome my deficits by engaging as much in this graduate class, enrolling in the ongoing technology education, and networking with more people who really enjoy technology. Also, I should go into teaching each class with specific and measurable goals: To intelligently plan and utilize a modern technology, ensure it works prior to executing, and track its success.
